Brazil's ethanol success story

When people ask whether high ethanol blends can really work, the answer is one word: Brazil. It has run ethanol in its petrol for half a century and today uses one of the highest blends on the planet — with a fleet built to match.
Born from an oil crisis
Brazil launched its Proálcool programme in 1975, after oil-price shocks made imported fuel painful. Sugarcane ethanol was the home-grown answer. The country's first ethanol-powered passenger cars arrived by the end of the 1970s.
The flex-fuel breakthrough
The real turning point came in 2003 with flex-fuel vehicles that let drivers choose between ethanol-blended petrol and pure ethanol at the pump. Buyers embraced them, and today roughly 82% of Brazil's light-vehicle fleet is flex-fuel. Pure ethanol (E100) is sold at most filling stations alongside blended petrol.
Among the world's highest blends
Brazil's standard petrol carried about 25% ethanol for years, rose to E27 in 2015, and moved to E30 from August 2025 — one of the highest mandated blends anywhere. A 2024 "Fuel of the Future" law even set a framework for blends ranging higher still.
What it delivered
The pay-off has been large. Analyses credit the programme with saving on the order of US$200 billion in avoided petrol imports over its lifetime and energy equivalent to billions of barrels of oil. Sugarcane ethanol is also assessed to cut greenhouse-gas emissions substantially versus petrol.
The honest caveat — it took time
Brazil's success was not overnight. It built its ethanol ecosystem over roughly five decades, with steady investment, clear pump labelling, flex-fuel as the default, and consistent policy. That patience is the real lesson for countries moving faster.
