E20 becomes the only petrol at regular pumps
From 1 April 2026, petrol pumps across India dispense only E20 — petrol blended with 20% ethanol. Regular E10 is no longer sold at ordinary outlets; ethanol-free petrol is now available only as premium 100-octane fuel at a much higher price. In practice, if you drive a petrol vehicle, E20 is what goes in your tank, so knowing whether your vehicle is built for it matters more than ever.
Owners raise mileage and older-vehicle concerns
As E20 becomes unavoidable, some owners report a noticeable mileage drop and worry about long-term effects on vehicles never designed for 20% ethanol. The government maintains that older vehicles can use E20 safely with routine maintenance, and industry body SIAM has said manufacturers will honour warranties on older vehicles running E20. The concern is generally sharper for older two-wheelers, which use more rubber and polymer parts per unit of engine size.
India hits 20% blending five years early
India reached its 20% average ethanol-blending target in 2025 — five years ahead of the original 2030 goal. Officials have highlighted the resulting cut in crude-oil imports and payments to farmers, and have signalled a phased move towards higher blends such as E25, E27 and E30 in the coming years.
