E20 compatible cars in India: the full guide

Every petrol car sold new in India today is E20 material-compliant. Cars manufactured from April 2023 under BS6 Phase 2 norms are built for E20; the question that matters is your car’s manufacturing date, not just its badge.

The rule that decides it

Compatibility is set by when your car was built, across every brand:

Manufacturing dateStandardE20 status
April 2023 onwardBS6 Phase 2E20 material-compliant — safe to use
April 2020 – March 2023BS6 Phase 1Built for E10 — verify before regular use
Before April 2020BS4 / olderNot E20-designed — prefer E10 / regular petrol

So a 2024 Maruti Swift is E20-compliant, while a 2018 Swift is not — same model, different answer, because the manufacturing date is different. Honda is the one broad exception: it states all its India-built cars from January 2009 onward are material-compatible with E20.

Brand-by-brand notes

Maruti Suzuki (Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Brezza, Fronx, WagonR, Ertiga, Grand Vitara): its current petrol and CNG range is built to the E20 standard. Many models also come in factory CNG, where the petrol tank follows the same date rule.

Hyundai (i20, Creta, Venue, Verna, Exter, Aura): current petrol models are E20-ready; diesel variants such as Creta and Venue diesel are unaffected by ethanol blending.

Tata (Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Altroz, Curvv): current petrol models meet the standard. Nexon EV, Punch EV and Tiago EV are electric and unaffected.

Honda (City, Amaze, Elevate): material-compatible since 2009 per Honda, with current models built to the latest norms.

Toyota, Kia, Mahindra, Volkswagen, Skoda, MG, Renault, Nissan, Citroën: all current petrol models on sale are built to the post-April-2023 E20 standard. Diesel SUVs (Fortuner, Harrier, Safari, Scorpio, XUV700 diesel, and so on) are unaffected by ethanol blending.

How to confirm your own car

Find the manufacturing month and year on the VIN plate (under the bonnet or on the driver’s door frame) or your registration certificate. Look inside the fuel flap for an “E20” label, and check the fuel page of your owner’s manual, which states the maximum ethanol blend your engine is approved for. For a definitive answer on your exact chassis number, an authorised service centre can confirm it.

What about diesel and electric cars?

Diesel is not blended with ethanol in India, so diesel cars are entirely unaffected by the E20 rollout. Electric cars have no petrol engine, so the question does not apply. Only petrol and petrol-CNG cars need to consider E20 compatibility.

Please note: this guide is general information, not a compatibility certificate for your specific vehicle. The verdict from our checker is an estimate based on manufacturing date and brand — always confirm with the “E20” label inside your fuel flap, your owner’s manual, or an authorised service centre before relying on it. It is not legal proof.
