Does E20 damage your engine?

In a vehicle built for E20, no — testing by ARAI, IOCL and SIAM found no significant engine damage in compatible vehicles. The real caution is for much older vehicles.

Compatible vehicles (April 2023 onward)

Vehicles made from April 2023 under BS6 Phase 2 use fuel-system parts — seals, hoses, gaskets, the pump — designed to handle 20% ethanol. Honda states its cars built in India since 2009 are already material-compatible. For these, E20 runs safely with only a small mileage change.

Older vehicles (before April 2020)

This is where genuine caution applies. Ethanol can, over time, affect older rubber and metal fuel-system components never specified for a 20% blend. It is a gradual wear concern rather than sudden failure. Where you can, older vehicles are better on E10 or regular petrol.

Bottom line
