Are BS6 vehicles E20 compatible?
It depends on the BS6 phase. BS6 Phase 2 vehicles — built from April 2023 — are E20 material-compliant and safe to run on E20. BS6 Phase 1 vehicles (April 2020 to March 2023) were built for E10; they can run E20 but were not certified for it, so it is worth verifying first.
BS6 Phase 1 vs BS6 Phase 2
“BS6” covers two different emission stages, and that is the source of most confusion:
- BS6 Phase 2 (from April 2023): the E20 mandate applies. These cars and bikes use fuel-system parts made to handle 20% ethanol. Safe for E20.
- BS6 Phase 1 (April 2020 – March 2023): designed for up to E10. Many are fine on the parts side, but E20 was not the certified standard for this period — confirm before running E20 regularly.
Is E20 good for a BS6 engine?
For a BS6 Phase 2 engine, E20 is exactly what it was built for — expect only a small 1–6% mileage change and no damage. For a BS6 Phase 1 engine, E20 will run, but since the pump now dispenses only E20, keep up with routine servicing and watch the fuel system over time.
How to check your BS6 vehicle’s date
Find the manufacturing month and year on the VIN plate (under the bonnet or on the door frame) or your registration certificate. From April 2023 you are on Phase 2 and E20-ready. You can also confirm with the “E20” label inside the fuel flap, or check your exact model below.
