Can I use E20 in an old car?
Vehicles built before April 2020 were not designed for a 20% ethanol blend, so E20 is not ideal for them — though an occasional tankful is unlikely to cause immediate harm.
What ethanol can do to an older vehicle
Over time and with regular use, a higher blend can affect older rubber and metal fuel-system parts — seals, hoses, gaskets, the pump — specified for lower-ethanol petrol. It is gradual wear, not a sudden breakdown.
What to do
- Where you can, use E10 or regular petrol.
- If only E20 is available, keep up with regular servicing and watch for fuel-system issues.
- Ask your service centre about any maker-approved retrofit or upgrade kit for your model.
