E20 vs E10 vs normal petrol

The number after the "E" is the ethanol percentage: E10 is 10% ethanol, E20 is 20%, and E85 is up to 85% (for flex-fuel vehicles).

E10

Up to 10% ethanol. Standard petrol across India for years; nearly all recent vehicles handle it without concern.

E20

20% ethanol, the current rollout. Vehicles from April 2023 are made for it; older ones should be checked. Expect a small mileage change and lower emissions versus E10.

E85 / flex-fuel

Up to 85% ethanol, usable only in flex-fuel vehicles designed for high blends. Still uncommon in India but growing.

Can any car use E85?
No. Only flex-fuel vehicles are built for E85.
