E20 vs E10 vs regular petrol: the differences explained
The number after the “E” is the percentage of ethanol. E10 is 10% ethanol, E20 is 20%, and E85 is up to 85% (for flex-fuel vehicles only). Since April 2026, E20 is the standard petrol at Indian pumps, having replaced E10.
E10 — the previous standard
E10 contains up to 10% ethanol. It was India’s standard petrol for years, and virtually every recent vehicle handles it without any concern. Globally, E10 remains the norm in the United States and much of Europe. In India it is now being phased out at ordinary pumps in favour of E20.
E20 — today’s standard in India
E20 doubles the ethanol content to 20%. Vehicles built from April 2023 are made for it; older ones should be checked. Compared with E10, expect a slightly larger but still small mileage drop, marginally lower emissions, and a small octane increase. For the millions of E20-ready vehicles on the road, the switch is essentially seamless.
E85 and flex-fuel
E85 contains up to 85% ethanol and can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles specifically designed for high ethanol blends. These are still uncommon in India but growing, and some new launches — including flex-fuel motorcycles — point to where the market may head as blending targets rise further.
